Stroke Fellowships

The American Academy of Neurology and Association of University Professors in Neurology offer a comprehensive database of neurology fellowships, including Cerebrovascular / Stroke Fellowships.


The Institute for Neurology and Neurosurgery at Beth Israel Medical Center in New York, through the support of the Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation, is sponsoring a one year fellowship in cerebrovascular disease and stroke. The foundation has a longstanding interest in remedying minority under-representation in the health professions.
The stroke program at Beth Israel Medical Center spans four acute care hospitals, including one tertiary referral center. The Singer Division houses a neurological intensive care unit, and an internationally recognized program in endovascular surgery, specializing in the treatment of aneurysms and arteriovenous malformations. Fellowship training includes work in a very active stroke prevention program, with the opportunity to participate in community outreach.

The Greater Cincinnati / Northern Kentucky Stroke Team and the Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of Cincinnati jointly sponsor a one year fellowship for Emergency Medicine physicians. The purpose of the fellowship is to further educate Emergency Medicine physicians on the rapidly expanding field of neurologic emergencies with a special attention to cerebrovascular diseases. The fellowship candidate will receive concentrated education in the areas of acute stroke, including ischemic and hemorrhagic, acute seizure management, traumatic brain injury, as well as other forms of neurologic emergencies encountered by the practicing emergency physician. It is the hope of the fellowship sponsors that the successful candidate will become a leader and educator in his/her future institution promoting the interests, care and education of emergency medicine physicians in the area of neurologic emergencies.

Stroke Fellowship Program, University of Pittsburgh Medical Center
A one or two year program providing the fellow with a comprehensive experience in the clinical management and clinical research of stroke, and educational opportunities in preparation for a clinical academic career in stroke.  Specific responsibilities include weekday rounds with the stroke service attending physician, teaching of rotating medical students and residents, and participation in weekly half day stroke outpatient clinic, where the fellow will provide ongoing longitudinal care to stroke patients.

Tufts University Comprehensive Stroke Center at the New England Medical Center is accepting applications for an unexpected opening for a Stroke Fellow.   Responsibilities will include day-to-day management of the dedicated in-patient stroke unit, supervision of neurology residents, maintenance of a computerized stroke database, participation in clinical trials of acute and subacute stroke management and prevention, and participation in the interdisciplinary Preventive Vascular Clinic. The opportunity also exists for additional training in: the care of patients with neurological disease in the intensive care unit; and the clinical application of transcranial ultrasound. Neurorehabilitation Fellowship, Washington University School of Medicine and Barnes-Jewish Hospital, St. Louis, Missouri.  Washington University School of Medicine and Barnes-Jewish Hospital, St. Louis, Missouri.  The Division of Rehabilitation of the Department of Neurology offers a one year clinical fellowship for individuals who have completed an approved residency in neurology, neurosurgery, or physical medicine and rehabilitation.

Stroke Fellowship Training at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine, St. Louis, MO.  We offer a two year fellowship in cerebrovascular disease. The goal of the fellowship is to provide solid clinical training for the diagnosis and management of stroke patients during the first year, and research opportunities for career development during the second year.

Stroke Neurologist/Neuro-Intensivist: The Department of Neurology and Sanders-Brown Center on Aging at the University of Kentucky are recruiting two faculty positions (one tenure-track & one non-tenure track) at the Assistant to Associate Professor Level. Physicians must be BE/BC in Neurology with one year of fellowship training in stroke or neuro-intensive care. The Spinal Cord and Brain Injury Research Center at the University of Kentucky College of Medicine invites applications for a tenure-track position at the level of Assistant or Associate Professor with the possibility of an Endowed Chair.  Applicants should have a M.D. and/or Ph.D. and at least 3 years postdoctoral research experience in neuroscience or a related discipline.  Physician-scientists are encouraged to apply.  Areas of particular interest include axon guidance, CNS regeneration, neural plasticity, neural precursor cells, neural tissue engineering, and neurotrophins.  Successful candidates will be expected establish a vigorous federally-funded research program, to participate in activities of a growing interdisciplinary team of spinal cord and head injury researchers, and to contribute to the teaching of graduate students.

Northern California Hospital seeking Director for their Stroke Program. The program has been operating since 1994. Currently doing approximately 250 cases/year. There is a designated floor for Neuroscience and the program receives outstanding support from the hospital. Research Fellowships

Postdoctoral Positions in Neuroscience at the University of Chicago's Cerebrovascular Disease and Aging Laboratories are available to study cellular and molecular mechanisms of 1) brain ischemic tolerance; and 2) synaptic dysfunction associated with aging or neurodegenerative diseases. Emphases are placed on use of hippocampal organ cultures; 4-dimensional, computer-based microscopic imaging strategies; modern electrophysiologic tools; and molecular biologic techniques that include differential gene/protein expression strategies.  Experience in cell culture techniques desirable and patch clamp technology or molecular biology essential.

Postdoctoral position at the Oregon Health Sciences University is available immediately to join NIH funded research in the area of gene profiling of glial lineage cells (oligodendrocytes and astrocytes) in tissue culture. Research has a particular focus on the developmental regulation of glial response to oxidative stress. Experience in basic cellular and molecular techiques is important (glial primary cultures, RNA isolation, Western blots, PCR, transfections). The research fellow will interface with our fully operational genomics and proteomics core facility in the department of pediatrics.

Postdoctoral Positions (Research Associate) are available immediately in the Center for Nervous System Injury at Washington University in St. Louis.  Positions are available to study (1) mechanisms of hypoxic-ischemic white matter injury, and (2) regeneration and recovery after hypoxic injury.  Candidates will develop projects involving in vitro models (primary cell culture, acute brain slices, organotypic slice cultures).   Additional tools include confocal and conventional fluorescence microscopy, calcium imaging, electrophysiology, and green fluorescent protein expression.  

Candidates must have an advanced degree (PhD or MD) and experience - supported by publications - in neuroscience. Expertise in axon or glial physiology or pharmacology, brain slice preparation, or fluorescence microscopy is highly desirable.
